Tossing in the Sponge

February 15, 2009

I know times are hard, and everyone is cutting costs where they can. But I’m here today to tell you that it’s worth investing that extra bit of money to buy a good scouring sponge.

See here, a picture of two sponges:

Colour aside, are they about the same?

Absolutely not.

The sponge on the left is a Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge that costs $3.50 per pack of 3, while the one on the right is some other  scouring sponge that costs less than half the price. (I believe generic supermarket brands of scouring sponges can be bought for about $2 per pack of 4).

After several months of experimenting with sponges, I have become a solid convert to Scotch-Brite sponges. Why? Because:

a) They get the grime off your pots and pans with much less effort than cheaper sponges do.

b) They also help to quickly remove all kinds of dark sauce stains and scratch marks on your sink and counter top. I never even realized scouring sponges could get rid of scratch marks. When you use the cheaper generic sponges, some of these marks/stains just will not budge I’m telling you.

c) They have a better shelf life, probably because you don’t have to scrub so hard to get the same grime off your utensils. They stay nice and solid and spongey for quite a while before it’s time to move on to the next sponge (which would help mitigate the higher cost to some degree, since you don’t have to replace them as often).

Here it is. Highly recommended!

Email message from a friend of mine, which I thought I should put up here =) :

// I couldnt help laughing when i read about the sponges. U know that happened to me when i first got married. My husband insisted on getting the 3M sponges as he believes anything from 3M is good and worth the money. I saw those cheaper sponges in a pack and i bought those as well. We did our comparison and yes Scotch Brite 3M wins hands down!
The irony is we had all these cheap sponges left in out cabinet and when we shipped our stuff over to London, we shipped them over as well. Didnt want to throw them away so here we are in London using the cheap sponges. Haha //

Oops sorry for the late reply to this Constance! I am eyeing the griddle, but realistically I don’t think I’ll make it… 65 stamps!!! But I should be able to get at least the smallest pot/pan… =)
