Colander

This started out as a short post about one colander. But as the weeks progressed one became two, and two became three.

Colanders may not be the world’s most exciting piece of kitchen equipment, but I’m here today to tell you why having a tidy little collection of colanders in varying shapes and sizes can make your kitchen life oh so much better!

1) A colander of the right shape can save you space in the sink

The dictionary says that a colander is “a perforated bowl used to strain off liquid from food“. But who says a bowl has to be round?

I’m sure many of you have seen this square colander from Joseph Joseph lurking about the home-ware sections of all our major department stores, and perhaps some of you have thought, “now why would I need a square colander?” And the answer is, because it is a much more efficient use of the space in your kitchen sink! It’s hard to see in the picture I have above, but my black Joseph Joseph square colander fits neatly into the corner of my rectangular sink. And it has numerous other highlights. Firstly, the single vertical handle ensures it remains upright and stable whilst rinsing and draining, and leaves one hand free for operating the tap. Secondly, its square shape fits perfectly into the sink and makes serving rinsed food easier. Lastly, the large vertical holes allow liquids to drain away quickly.

You might think a Joseph Joseph colander would cost a pretty penny, but I think it’s on sale most of the time here and available for about S$17 or so. And unlike when I first bought it, you can now get the colander in all four colours in Singapore.

2) A small colander with tiny holes can make washing certain foods a whole lot easier

I have always found washing minced meat to be a major hassle. Either you don’t manage to drain a lot of the water away, or you end up draining a whole lot of meat with the water.

But thanks to my awesome trusty and teeny tiny colander from Daiso (it’s only about 6 inches in diameter), this is a problem of the past! With a gentle shake, a whole lot of liquid is drained, and all your meat stays in the colander. Also because the colander is small, it doesn’t take up unnecessary space in the sink and is easy to wash. Great =)

3) A cleverly-shaped colander with a handle can help get your food out of hot water

I got this Joseph Joseph scoop colander from G.O.D. in Hong Kong. I’ve also seen it in Australia but not in Singapore (at least not yet).

It’s really good for when you have to remove vegetables or small pieces of meat from hot water or hot oil. The design of the head is very clever, and gives you a much better angle from which to swoop the food out as compared to your regular semi-spherical metal sieve. I use this one very often.

So you see, there’s more to colanders that might first meet the eye. *wink*

    I should have bought one of those square ones when I was in Singapore!! They look great!

    Nice post about colander! I have the round plastic one and a metal one…. The square one looks handy!

    tigerfish: haha yeah i do. it’s a real hassle but i just feel funny not rinsing all meat…
    Ellie: you must have those beautiful enamel martha-stewart-ish ones right, if you have a metal one? I’ve eyed those for ages but feel bad buying yet another colander!
    Pauline: yeah they really are! you can get them in OZ though, and around the same price
